I woke up this morning from my haze of yesterday's games and one song was stuck in my head. It's Over by ELO. For those of you young whippersnappers, ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) did this great song on its classic Out of the Blue album released in 1977. If you don't know it, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRgB1I3HNYg - enjoy it. While this song is great, it is with sadness that another season is done. We laughed, we cried (well I cried), we fought, we mocked, and I hope we had a little fun. I know the "Rantings of an Idiot" emails are silly and sometimes lead to some strange happenings occur (a DnD discussion broke out in the middle of a football pool..,smh. I admonished Rachel for this during our game on Saturday - yes we have a campaign going and had some "death save" rolls, but I digress), but it is all in fun.
To the new members, I appreciate your joining. To returning members, I really appreciate you staying with this and bringing in more members. Without you all I am a sad old man just watching way too much football. For next season, if you want to bring in more people, we will come up with some more fun ways of distributing money (if you have ideas, let me know - I like to take suggestions).
This week's games:
Wow - what a weekend. The KC Chiefs brought "Ring around the Rosie" into football. The Dolphins won their way into the playoffs and so did Seattle. Buffalo recovered from last week to put a beatdown on the Patriots. The Eagles did their best to look awful, but did manage to capture the #1 seed in the NFC. It was also good to see the NFL rally around Damar Hamlin, who - it sounds like - is making progress in his recovery. Doug Pederson showed what a good coach can do taking the Jaguars from a dumpster fire under Urban Meyer and getting them into the playoffs with a win over the Titans who went from 7-3 to 7-10! 7 straight losses! Yikes.
Today is typically known as under another name, but I will rename it "Firing Day" as Kliff Kingsbury of the Arizona Cardinals was already let go (and the GM resigned with him). The Texans didn't even wait until today, firing Lovey Smith yesterday for winning and screwing up the #1 overall pick (how can you fire a guy named Lovey!!). Quick fact: The Chicago Bears got the number 1 pick for the first time since 1946! This is back when Rob Dolnick was just a fair-haired child.
To the Pool:
This week had scores of 10-7 and 11- 9, but was offset by the Bills 35 and the aforementioned Houston Texans going for 2 to beat the Indianapolis Colts 32-31 (The Colts, being the Colts, did not wait until today to fire their coach, They did it on November 7th. Unless they want to fire Jeff Saturday on Monday) So who won the week? Well, his Jets were, well the Jets, but Lee Paciello can take solace from his 99 points and winning the week. This is the 8th week that was won with a score under 100. Lee (Bills - 35, and Houston 32 * 2) bested Dan Ciano (Commanders - 26, Vikings - 29, 49ers - 38 for 93 points) and me (Chiefs - 31 *2, Cincinnati - 27 = 89) to take his second weekly win of the year.
The lowest score of the week was a tie. Another TIE! Adam Kastin and Mike McGrory fought for the lowest score and each scored 29. Adam (Cowboys - 6, Saints - 7, Giants - 16) and Mike (Saints - 7, Giants - 16, Jets - 6) "beat out" Shaun Day who had 36.
Overall:
This is truly the toughest thing I will ever write. The overall winner is:
1) Rob Dolnick - 1369. Yes, much to my chagrin I will be sending Dolnick his money for a "well earned" victory.
2) Rob Watts - 1320. Yes, the English are easy to mock (WTF Prince or Duke Harry), but Rob showed consistency by winning three weeks
3) Melissa O'Meara - 1311. Melissa was brought in this year by Erik Hartwell and staked a claim by moving from #10 to #3 in Week 8 and never looking back.
The lowest score for the season (Harry Mumma Memorial Award) goes to John Idzik. John - 1037 staked a claim to the lowest score by having the lowest weekly score 3 times and while I am still not sure this is not just a "bot" submitted By Kevin Matthews. Will get the Last Place share.
Some stats:
We had 51 participants. 22 of whom (43%) will receive some sort of payout. They range from Dolnick's $1,150 to Mike McGrory's $12.50 for a tie on the last week's lowest score.
My family was shut out! Yes, Lee is my brother-in-law, but the Mumma's went 0-fer for the pool. I guess I am going to have to keep on working. Tin hats and conspiracy theorists are crying in their beers.
The highest score of the pool was 117 by Rob Watts in Week 14.
The Lowest score was 17 by Lee Paciello in Week 5. One point away from the all-time low of 16 points in Week 11 of 2017.
The average NFL team score was 21.90 and 11,860 points were scored during the season. Straight math does not work as the Bills/Bengals game did not occur.
The average pool score was 65.9.
So here are the payouts. I will start sending money after work tonight so please CONFIRM your payment details, if you are getting a payout.
